With my last birth my midwife (her name was siobhan too) she was inspired by such an app like freya and how calm and relaxed I was listening to all the positive affirmations and fabulous meditations! "Overall I enjoyed the course and I think it helped me to have a smooth labour and birth. However: 1. It is very word-heavy, with mostly just Siobhan talking to you on the screen. As a visual learner I would have loved some diagrams / images / dot points. E.g. when talking about how the muscles contract during surges adding a diagram to understand it better, or perhaps a flowchart of the steps of labour in the printed materials. 2. I believe the course is mostly based on evidence, but more sources would be good. At one point Siobhan said that she just "feels" that it makes sense that foetuses are different sizes because adults are. I looked this up and from a certain number of weeks that is true, however it's not very comforting to be taught by someone who just "feels" that what they're telling you is true. 3. Joining this online course from the Netherlands meant lots of the UK stuff was not applicable to me (and surely others)."

"I have mixed feelings about this course. There were some things I liked and found helpful, especially the positive affirmations that kept me calm and optimistic right up until the birth. But I was let down by the description of the pushing phase of labor which left me unprepared and ultimately made it take much longer. She describes the act as “breathing the baby down” and specifically mentions several times there should not be a need for forceful pushing or bearing down. This is simply not going to be true for everyone, and it was not true for me. Had I followed this advice totally, my baby would have made no progress and would have required delivery via C-section. I pushed for 5 hours in total - wasting 3 because I had the wrong expectations for this phase of labor. Happily, I can say he was born very healthy with forcep assistance, and it was a beautiful and empowering experience. I am grateful for a course that prioritizes a positive mindset, but not at the expense of reality."

"I did the PBC course in 2019 with my first baby. I laboured at home (in the downstairs loo!) for 4hrs using just a tens machine, 2 paracetamol & the up breathing. I arrived at the MLU fully dilated, shocking the midwives who ran down the corridor to fill the pool up & wouldn’t let me walk to the room incase I gave birth in the corridor! I breathed my back2back baby out within an hour in the pool. It was the best experience any of my friends & NCT had ever heard. Currently 7months pregnant with my 2nd baby & listening to the course again. Excited for birth & only anxious incase it isn’t as good as last time! The PBC is an absolute game changer for birth & I recommend it to everyone!"

"Found the course really positive, it helped me begin to unlearn a lot of negative associations I had with childbirth due to media and my personal experiences as a doctor who has worked in O&G. It gave a lot of tips that I used such as tea lights, music, spritz, the affirmation track. But I did feel that most of the key learning points were in the free videos on youtube. Also this idea that you could breathe away pain was difficult! the 4 in, 8 out technique did not work for me, I found the pain too much, and could just manage 4 in, 4 out with gas and air. But I managed without an epidural as I wanted to remain in that UFO position. I think you need to be someone who already does mindfulness, meditation etc to be able to truly do hynobirthing and experience little pain. I'll make sure I practice this for longer before the next one! And although I wanted a quiet birth after the course, in the end I had ALOT of midwives and a doctor around, but I felt really held in a female embrace"
